- Poor Drainage and Water Intrusion
When surface grading leaves water sitting in low spots or tight against a curb line, that water finds every hairline crack within days. Once moisture reaches the aggregate base, it softens the material that’s supposed to carry load evenly, and the mat above starts to flex under traffic instead of holding a steady profile. This process rarely reverses on its own. A crack left open through a full season stops being a cosmetic issue and starts feeding water into the base below it. Small cracks and minor pothole edges are inexpensive to seal or patch while they’re still isolated, but each missed maintenance cycle lets that same damage connect to the freeze-thaw movement, drainage problems, and base instability already covered above.
